AGCM is the Assemblies of God Campus ministry. Its mission is to draw students from Assemblies of God, Ghana and other churches together on the various campuses and to help continue the nurturing that their mother churches provide them when at home. Its organization is built on fellowship, prayer, discipline and missions. Their chapters can be found in Universities, Polytechnics, Training Colleges, Professional Institutions and Secondary Schools. The AGCM holds a biennial congress to select her leaders.
AGCM began at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KUST) as Assemblies of God Students Union (AGSU). AGSU was an offshoot of an already existing Union of Students then led by Moses Easel Kwame Ahun at the Light House Assemblies of God, (Central Church) in Kumasi. After gaining admission to KNUST, Moses mobilized 12 men to continue with the work on campus under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The AGSU gained a foothold on University of Science and Technology, now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in 1982.
In 1986, the name AGCM was adopted in place of AGSU under the leadership of Rev Nana Yaw Nti. Not long after, AGCM began to spread to other tertiary institutions including University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, Takoradi Polytechnic, and Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), now University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra. The membership of AGCM chapters rose from one (1) since its inception to eleven (11) in 1991. By 1997, the chapter number stood at eighteen (18), which further increased to 35 by 1999. At the moment, AGCM has over 180 chapters in the various Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Educations, Nurses’ training schools and Second Cycle institutions.
According to Emmanuel Nuamah, the National Campus Director, AGCM was formed to offer career guidance and counselling to Christian students. In other words, the students were to be brought together in order to forge mutual cooperation. In so doing they could help one another in their studies and in the choosing of their careers. This also enabled experienced students to assist the inexperienced. In addition, the Assemblies of God students coming together would result in the mobilization of other students together for effective evangelism, training and mutual edification in the Christian faith.
Missions have been and continue to be the preoccupation of AGCM. In keeping with the mission vision of the ministry, the leadership at all levels (local and national) is regularly encouraged to make the winning of converts a priority in the ministry. The response has always been very heartwarming. Hence their motto: ‘AGCM, our mission is missions’,
Congress is the most important of AGCM’s national programs. Because of a large number of members and the dispersion of the AGCM chapters, Congress is organized biennially to provide a forum for fellowship between chapters and members. Congress also marks the end of the two-year term of the national executives. It is also the occasion for the induction of a new set of executives. Major AGCM national decisions are also made or discussed at the congress.
